{"id":94,"date":"2010-01-24T18:34:14","date_gmt":"2010-01-24T23:34:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.intlculturelab.org\/blog\/?page_id=94"},"modified":"2013-10-27T12:57:06","modified_gmt":"2013-10-27T17:57:06","slug":"avant-yarde-0210","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.intlculturelab.org\/blog\/?page_id=94","title":{"rendered":"Avant Yarde 02\/10"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Sunday, February 14, Valentine&#8217;s Day<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.intlculturelab.org\/images\/avantyarde\/whatsheknew\/images\/letter1.jpg\" alt=\"Waxed Sealed Valentine Letter\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wax-Sealed Valentine Letter  <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The guidelines  for this potlatch were  simply to bring a Valentine to share &#8212; either chocolate, wine, flowers or love note, or some combination thereof.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.intlculturelab.org\/images\/avantyarde\/whatsheknew\/images\/4audience4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A staged reading of <a title=\"george hunka\" href=\"http:\/\/www.georgehunka.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">George Hunka&#8217;s<\/a> play <em>What She Knew <\/em>was performed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.intlculturelab.org\/index.php?g=team\" target=\"_blank\">Gabriele Schafer<\/a> along with two short performance pieces:  <em>Broken Umbilical Cord<\/em>, created and performed by <a title=\"fulya peker\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fulyapeker.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fulya Peker <\/a>and <em>On the Ground<\/em>, created and performed by <a title=\"Irem Calikusu\" href=\"http:\/\/iremcalikusu.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Irem Calikusu.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>George has written a few thoughts <a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgehunka.com\/blog\/index.cgi\/2010\/02\/10#whatsheknew_3\" target=\"_blank\">about the event<\/a> and the nature of <a title=\"george about rainer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.georgehunka.com\/blog\/index.cgi\/2010\/02\/15#dayafter\" target=\"_blank\">presenting new work <\/a> at <em>Superfluities Redux.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.intlculturelab.org\/images\/avantyarde\/whatsheknew\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">View photo album<\/a><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">What She Knew<\/h4>\n<p>Drawing on the Sophoclean and Senecan version of the Oedipus story, George Hunka&#8217;s <em>What She Knew<\/em> is a contemporary meditation on the role Jocasta plays in the tragedy: a woman whose willful participation in Oedipus&#8217; guilt reveals an extraordinary capacity for erotic and sexual transgression as a means to freedom, as an avenue to outwit time, place and her own desiring and desirous body. She strides through centuries, balancing between the ecstasy of loss in another&#8217;s body and the agony of moral criminality.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Gabriele Schafer \" src=\"http:\/\/www.intlculturelab.org\/images\/avantyarde\/whatsheknew\/images\/gaby9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gabriele Schafer in stage reading of &quot;What She Knew&quot;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">Broken Umbilical Cord<\/h4>\n<p>Fulya Peker&#8217;s Modern Mythologies Project intends to unite fine arts, performing arts, and literature to enact the creative pioneers of the past who engraved the landscape of existence with their thoughts and works. The spoken text and sounds (recorded), formed through a poetic re-arrangement of the artist&#8217;s personal writings, are used as the music for the moving\/gesticulating\/responding body of the performer who becomes a canvas and embodies the artist&#8217;s artworks. The aim of this project is to transform the creator into a creation; the artist into an artwork and to unite the observer and the observed. The first piece of the Modern Mythologies Project, &#8220;Hands of a Suicide&#8221; (Edward Munch), was performed in Leigne-sur-Ussau, France, in 2009. &#8220;Broken Umbilical Cord&#8221; (Kathe Kollwitz) will be the second piece of the Modern Mythologies Project.
